Die Freeware "Search Google" läßt einen neuen Service im OSX-Finder erscheinen: Search Google (stimmts - das hättet Ihr nicht erwartet!). Fortan markiert man einen Text und mit CMD-shift-G begibt sich Google auf die Suche. Search Google wohnt im Finder/Dienste-Menü und funktioniert garantiert nicht mit Microsoft-Produkten. Liebe auf den zweiten Blick -

"Ich betrachtete also dieses Werbefilmchen - und dachte nach. Und zwar über die Computerkatastrophen, die meine Vorweihnachtszeit 2001 in ein Minenfeld verwandelt hatten. ClarusX is a free Mac OS X hack to replace the page setup dialog icons (aka "boring guy") found in Mac OS X with the classic Macintosh icon, Clarus the DogCow. For those millions new to the Mac, here is the story:

The dogcow was born in the early eighties at Apple Computer. It used to live in the Page Setup dialog to represent a printed page's orientation in the new Page Setup dialog. With the Page Setup dialog began the legend of the dogcow. A legend which goes something like this...

Once the Mac was in the hands of the people, it soon became apparent that one little problem had occurred. Many users mistakenly identified the little spotted dog as a cow. Executives at Apple flew into a tizzy, and the developers were up in arms. Company-wide, the question was asked: Is this little black-and-white image actually a dog, or had they been deceived and was it really a cow? The debate raged. Heated conversations erupted everywhere, usually consisting of just two words hollered back and forth. "Dog!" "Cow!" "Dog!" "Cow!" (Okay, maybe this is an exaggeration.)

Quark, der Hersteller mit dem bekannt flinken Service, hat es auch bei Neuentwicklungen nicht eilig: die neueste Version des Layoutprogramms Quark XPress kommt nur in einer Version für Mac OS 9.x auf den Markt. The Blade's reporting on 1.4 GHz may also be on the money, the same source says. Apple representatives at Macworld hinted that 1 GHz would just be the starting point, but just how far Apple can get with the Apollo chip hasn't been quite clear. Opera Software released the final version of Opera 5.0 for Mac OS 7.5.3-9.2. Mac users can now download a final version of the browser that includes features such as cookie manager, a sophisticated hotlist, muliple download monitor and keychain support. Jobs: No merging Macs with TVs - So what's next?

[ CNN ]: " "I think you'll be seeing a lot of different things. We'll clearly be continuing to refine the digital hub suite of applications. We may have some other surprises," Jobs said.

A number of computer makers and software giant Microsoft Corp. are aiming to bring the personal computer into the living room, making it an entertainment machine that would be part television. Television maker and sometime Apple rival Sony Corp. and TiVo Inc., for example, are cooperating in development of products that record video on computer hard drives.

Apple, meanwhile, introduced its first consumer electronics device in nearly a decade last October with the iPod portable music player, which has sold 125,000 units in about 60 days. Keynote MacWorld San Fransisco 2002 - Eine Riesenshow, ein neuer iMac, viele geplatzte "iWishes"

Der iMac 2002 in dürren technischen Daten: 15-Zoll Aktivmatrix LCD, 700-800-MHz G4 , SuperDrive (CD-RW/DVD-RW), GeForce2 MX Grafikkarte mit 32 MB Grafikkarte DDR-SDRAM, USB, FireWire, Ethernet, Apple Pro Speakers, Mikrofon, AirPort vorbereitet, iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD.

Die Preise: ¥ 1.854, 84 (DM 3.627,75) ab März lieferbar, 2086,84 ¥ (ab Februar), 2550,84 ¥ (ab Ende Januar). Cyberport z.B. bietet den teuersten iMac mit 2449.00 ¥ und den mittleren mit 1989 ¥. Technische Details finden sich z.B. bei MacGadget. Einer der alten iMacs bleibt im Programm: der iMac G3/500 mit CD-ROM-Laufwerk mit einem empfohlener Verkaufspreis von 1158,84 Euro.

Daneben gibt es ein neues iBook-Modell mit größerem Bildschirm und iPhoto, eine kostenlose Consumer-Software, die eine Brücke schlägt zwischen der geekigen Digitalkamera und dem sonntagsnachmittagsbesuchs-kompatiblen Fotoalbum für die Familie.

Keine schnelleren PowerMacs, keine GHz-Boliden, schon gar kein "iWalk". Nach inzwischen alter Apple-Tradition kommen erst die Consumer-Produkte, die Pros müssen etwas länger warten (bis März/April?).

Ein wunderschöner neuer "Luxor Jr."-iMac, eine vielversprechende Stratgie, weitere Spielzeuge des Digital Hub-Zeitalters in der Pipeline: Apple wird es möglicherweise schaffen, als erster Hersteller aus dem Tal der Rezessionstraenen herauszukommen. "The way we're going to survive is to innovate our way out of this." Die vorzeitige Veröffentlichung des iMac durch TIME (inzwischen "offiziell" online) hat Apple gekonnt abgefangen: die Printausgabe mit dem ominösen Cover und der Enthüllungsgeschichte wurde kostenlos am Ausgang verteilt.

Wir hatten einen Riesenspaß bei unserer Live-Berichterstattung von der Keynote und zählten um die 50 Mitleser auf der ITW-Site. Wo die Video-Übertragung floppte, ersetzte ein Telefonkommentar die Bildleitung, der O-Ton aus San Fransisco war dagegen dauernd über das Internet zu hören. (January 7., 2002, )

"Victory in our industry is spelled survival," says Jobs. "The way we're going to survive is to innovate our way out of this."

The new iMac, which Time took for an exclusive test run recently and which will be unveiled at the annual Macworld convention in San Francisco this week, could be just the thing. Like many PCs today, the new iMac is built around a flat-panel display. But instead of taking up precious desk space like a typical flat monitor, the iMac's screen floats in the air, attached to a jointed, chrome-pipe neck. It's also rimmed by a "halo," a translucent plastic frame that makes you want to pull it toward you-or push it out of the way. Jonathan Ive, chief of Apple's ID lab, says he designed it so that you would want to touch it, want to "violate the sacred plane of the monitor." [ much more... ]
Also revealed in the article are details of Apple's iPhoto software, which will allow users to easily create photo albums from their digital images.

First commentary at MacRumors: " Granted, this new iMac which Time describes -- assuming there is no mysterious agenda behind this early disclosure -- is impressive, it's supercompact, has an awesome display-positioning system, includes a SuperDrive, iDVD, and iPhoto....yes, you read right, iPhoto...", MaCNN, MacMinute.

Update: Macwelt profitiert offensichtlich vom IDG-Network (mit firmeneigenem Satelliten) und schreibt in seinem Morgenmagazin vom 07.01.2002:

Apple hat dem Time Magazine vorab den neuen iMac, den Steve Jobs heute vorstellen wird, gezeigt. Bereits seit dem Wochenende sind hat die Website von Time Canada in einer vorab publizierten Titelgeschichte Details über den neuen Rechner verraten. Demnach besteht der Rechner aus einer halbkugelförmigen Basis, an der über einen metallischen Hals ein 15-Zoll-TFT-Display angeschlossen ist. [ ZDNet ]: " Der Neuling soll eine Kreuzung zwischen einem Pocket PC-basiertem PDA und einer Fernbedienung sein. Ein ähnliches Gerät hatte Elektronikkonzern Sony (Börse Frankfurt: SON1) bereits im Oktober vergangenen Jahres mit dem CliŽ PEG-T415 vorgestellt (ZDNet berichtete). Microsofts neuer Mischling soll Microsofts Terminal Server verwenden. Die Software steuert den Datenaustausch zwischen PC-Gerät und Server." [ weiter... ]

Daß Apples finanzielles Wohlergehen in den nächsten Monaten stark vom "Digital Lifestyle" abhängt, in dem auch Microsoft "Mira" plazieren wird, glaubt auch CNet:

"Meanwhile, the performance of Apple's stock may depend on announcements beyond the anticipated iMac change, analysts said. UBS Warburg analyst Don Young sees Apple offering more non-PC products.

"We continue to warm up to the positioning of Apple in the 'Digital Life Style' and free from the constraints of a low-market-share PC player," Young said in his latest Apple report. Natürlich weiss ich es genausowenig wie jeder andere, aber ich habe beim Anblick dieses Designs ein ganz bestimmtes Gefühl. Dieses Gefühl hatte ich auch, als der Original-iMac vorgestellt wurde (übrigens auch, als die Beatles "Yesterday" veröffentlichten...):

das Gefühl, das man dieses Ding eigentlich schon lange kennt. Es sieht innovativ, aber nicht zu fremd aus, und es erinnert an etwas. In diesem Fall an Luxor Jr., die springlebendige Schreibtischlampe, die zu einem Markenzeichen von Pixar - Jobs Zweitfirma - wurde. Wie es der Zufall will, haben wir noch vor ein paar Tagen auf die Kurzfilme von Pixar hingewiesen ("You can't rush art"), und dort kann man Luxor Jr. wunderbar in Aktion sehen.

Alles zusammen: dieser iMac zeigt ganz eindeutig die Handschrift von Jonathan Ive, Apples englischem Chefdesigner. Nur der kann machen, daß ein brandneues Gerät aussieht wie ein Klassiker. (January 7., 2002, majo)

Auch die etwas in den Hintergrund gedrängte Frage, was Steve Jobs tragen wird, ob er einen Bart hat, und ob er von links oder rechts auf die Bühne kommt, wird spätestens heute abend entschieden sein. Und noch ein paar Fragen mehr.

More than music in your iPod - Bevor am Montag abend die neuesten Spielzeuge von Apple über uns hereinbrechen, lasst uns schnell die letzten noch mal genauer betrachten.

Diese Software wandelt Telefonnummern, Adressen, Kalenderdaten usw. in MP3-Dateien (!) und speichert sie auf dem iPod. Dort kann man sie mit den normalen Navigationshilfen des iPod durchsuchen. Man muss sich nur daran gewöhnen, daß man z.B. seine eMail-Adressen unter "Artists" suchen muss.

Auf der MWSF soll der "Panorama iPod Organizer" zum Preis von $19.95 vorgestellt werden. Falls das mit dem iWalk nichts werden sollte... (January 5., 2002, )

iWalk or iWish? - If the material about the rumored iWalk really is a hoax, it's a good one.

Wired takes on the spymac publication of a rumored new iWalk device, questioning the credibility of the source and calling the videos a complicated hoax.

Ok, if you tend to take information like these too serious, you'll be having a hard time while Apple itself is encouraging speculation. Neither Wired nor spymac know anything, they're both speculating. This is entertainment, not bone hard fact gathering, and we all should be sufficiently illuminated to distinguish between the two.

Or, as Dan Gillmor puts it: "Anyway, it's fun to speculate".

iWalk - an Apple PDA at MWSF finally? - First sighting of an Apple PDA: footage appears to be authentical.

Maybe this is Apples "backstage pass to the future": a rumor site has images and videos that indeed look authentical.

[ spymac ]: "The color of the iWalk fits in perfectly with the rest of Apple's line: its glossy-white exterior is sleek and simple. And like the iPod, the PDA sports what appears to be a "jog-dial" at the bottom of the unit that can be used for easy navigation.

Apple fans should be happy to hear that the iWalk is not based on the Palm OS. The OS shown in the video looks like a blend between traditional PDA operating systems and Apple's OS X. Some other interesting observations:
The iWalk accepts handwriting input with a silver stylus. The user is able to write on the entire screen to input information, and is not limited to a small "text box" like of the Palm line of PDAs.

The iWalk is larger than PDAs currently on the market, with the majority of the extra size being given to screen real-estate. All of the main ports are at the top of the unit. We can clearly make out Firewire, audio-in and audio-out ports. In the center is a relatively large unmarked port which we speculate as being a port for Apple's new Gigawire." Essential Reality, developer and manufacturer of computer peripherals, has announced that P5ú, a glove-like product for full motion 3D graphics control, will be fully compatible with Mac OS X. Due in May, it's targeted to 3D experiences in interactive gaming, business, education, and personal computer assistance for the disabled. Die Keynote zur MWSF wird am 7.1.02 ab ca. 18:00 Uhr deutscher Zeit per QuickTime-Streaming hier live übertragen. Wenn die Video-Übertragung so überlastet ist wie in den Vorjahren, kann man auf die fast ebenso schnellen Echtzeit-Textübertragungen ausweichen, z.B. bei MacMinute.

In den Gerüchtebörsen werden derweil die "üblichen Verdächtigen" vorgeführt: einige tippen auf einen Apple-eigenen Internet-TV-Dienst a'la iTelevise oder auf ein Digital Hub-System, das an die Stereoanlage angeschlossen wird und drahtlos MP3-Songs vom Mac überträgt. Die Komponenten dazu wären bereits vorhanden: Airport, iTunes, QuickTime, iDisk, Mac OS. Andere glauben lediglich an eine Revision des iBook.

Apple selbst beweist wieder mal, daß es die unterhaltsamste Computerfirma des Erdballs ist - der neue Teaser auf der Apple-Homepage sagt jedenfalls nur eines: "HYPE!! HYPE!! HYPE!!"
