Pacifist: a Tome Viewer for OSX -
[ Mac OS X Hints ]: "Pacifist is an attempt to provide a "Tome Viewer" application for OS X. Tome Viewer allowed you to browse OS 9 installation packages and extract only those bits that you wanted; Pacifist's goal is to offer the same features for OS X.
Why might this be useful? If you deleted Sherlock, for example, you would need to re-run the OS X installer, and it's doubtful that you would have a CD that matches the current 10.1.2 version. So if you follow Apple's advice, you'd have to reformat your drive, install 10.1 from CD, then upgrade to 10.1.2 just to get Sherlock back.
Using Pacifist, it's a much simpler process. Insert your 10.1 CD, launch Pacifist, and nagivate to System -> Installation -> Packages and then open Essentials.pkg . Pacifist will display a list of everything installed from Essentials.pkg, one of which is Sherlock. Select "Extract To..." from the File menu, and you've now reinstalled Sherlock." GoLive 6 for OS X at Macworld? - GoLive 6 recently reached the final gold master stage
[ Think Secret ]: "In our initial visual feature , we reported that GoLive 6 will feature revamped database-accessing functionality, putting it into competition with Macromedia's Dreamweaver UltraDev, and new workgroup functionality to compete with Macromedia's SiteSpring. The difference? All features will reportedly be included in the $299 package, while Macromedia's solutions run into the thousands of dollars. Additionally, it is said that GoLive's workgroup server will run on Mac OS X." [ more... ]
MacWorld has a timeline of OSX native applications that will be avaliable - or not - in the near future. "Macromedia, which shipped the OS X-native FreeHand last spring, has kept a tight lip on when to expect Carbonized versions of Dreamweaver, Flash, and Fireworks." (December 30., 2001, )

FireWire Goes Wireless at 5 GHz - A recent cooperative effort between the IEEE 802.11e Wireless LAN Task Group and the 1394 Trade Association allowed Apple's FireWire to not only go wireless but to dramatically increase its speed.
[ OS Opinion ]: "Although the technology will be ideal for audio and video streams, the best solution for the technology will most likely be found in home networking. (...) In addition to the ability to transfer live multimedia content, the ability to network a room full of computers at such high speeds makes it possible to implement this type of clustering capability."

[ System 6 Heaven ]: "With Mac OS X Apple finally succeeded in releasing an operating system that (more than) matches the stability and simpliciy and beauty of System 6. However being build on an Unix base instead of the classic Macintosh operating system, it also is as far removed from system 6 as you can get. So, one can imagine that the compatibility of System 6 (and for that matter system 7) with OS X is rather limited. Luckily they do share some compatibility..." [ weiter... ]
[ MacTerminal HowTo ]: "Remember the old days when your Unix computer was just a 'dumb terminal' that 'talked' to the REAL computer? You had no hard drive, just an old fashioned screen with really big keys that were really hard to push down? We're going to do the same thing here. Except the screens are newer, they have hard drives attached and the keys are much easier on the fingers." [ weiter... ] (December 23., 2001, )

Use iPod as a PDA - Heavy Mac overheads these days. We're taking the time to update the machinery, that's why.
[ Cube Zone ]: "Rich Goldman has written a script that lets you use your iPod as a PDA. You can browse your Entourage/Outlook contacts on your iPod! Why have a Palm if you can use an iPod? You first have to run the script. Then you plug in your iPod to sync up (the contact files are hidden in a MP3 file, using ID3 tags... that's the trick...). On the iPod, you have to browse under Artist, and find "Adress Book". You can scroll through the list of contact names and select the name of the person in order to see the information about that person. This little piece of software still has some bugs, but is very promising!" Requires Microsoft Entourage, iTunes and an iPod.

(December 21., 2001, )

Applescript Studio - Free with Developer Tools, requires OS X 10.1.2
[ Macuser ]: " AppleScript Studio provides a set of tools that allow the user to build an OS X-style interface, to control the execution of an AppleScript or a set of AppleScripts. (...) AppleScript Studio is free as part of the latest set of Apple's developer tools for OS X. As it requires OS X 10.1.2 we can assume that that will be available shortly. The download is accompanied by extensive documentation and though it sounds fairly daunting, creating a simple AppleScript is as easy as recording a few keystrokes and mouse clicks." Apple's New KnowledgeBase - A personalised center of expertise
[ via Mac OS X Hints ]: "You can create a customized "home page" with preference settings for what type of search you wish to be the default, how many articles to display per page, and what categories of news you are interested in seeing.
The search engine itself has also been greatly improved with "smart searches" and (something I hope to add here in the near future) keyword searches to help narrow your results.
But the most useful new feature is the ability to save favorite articles and favorite searches to create a personalized support page. For example, I've added the What's New, New Software Downloads and OS X Manuals articles to my Favorite Articles section. I also created a search that finds any OS X articles that have been updated within the last two days (using the new OS X keyword and the timeframe-based search criteria) and saved it as "OS X Recent News". All of these saved articles and searches show up as hyperlinks on my support page." (December 16., 2001, )

MPEG 4 - a Comeback For Quicktime? - Why Quicktime is not dominating the web, and why this could change.
[ cnet ]: "Even as Apple celebrates QuickTime's 10th anniversary, the company is aiming to create a new beginning for its storied technology; as it incorporates the MPEG-4 standard into QuickTime, the media player is on the verge of undergoing its most significant overhaul since adopting streaming capabilities four years ago, according to digital media experts. (...)
The effect of MPEG-4 on QuickTime "is going to be huge," said Bill Bernat, technical editor at Streaming Media , a San Francisco media company that produces trade shows, editorial content and research reports. "The entire nature of QuickTime is going to move from an advanced but proprietary technology to an interoperable technology. And interoperability will change pretty much all of streaming. QuickTime may not be the only winner, but it could be part of a group that will dominate streaming media and possibly other forms of digital media." [ more... ]

(December 13., 2001, majo)

OS X Implementation of Network Utility Nmap - Open source utility for network exploration
MacOSX.org has a download link for an OS X implementation of the network utility Nmap. Nmap ("Network Mapper") is an open source utility for network exploration or security auditing. It was designed to rapidly scan large networks, although it works fine against single hosts. Nmap uses raw IP packets in novel ways to determine what hosts are available on the network, what services (ports) they are offering, what operating system (and OS version) they are running, what type of packet filters/firewalls are in use, and dozens of other characteristics.
